Susan’s Sight Site

A Sideways Look At Life!

This is the website of Susan Buckingham, who is a 75-year-old, tap-dancing silver-surfing, incurably optimistic, registered blind person who, literally, looks at life close up and sideways.

This is Susan sitting at her computer using Dolphin Supernova software which provides magnification and a voice.

She is unable to see the legend on the keys so, being a touch-typist, she quickly learnt to find her way around the keyboard by touch; she makes extensive use of short cut key strokes and hot keys. See below for an idea of the magnification used.

This picture shows the obscured central area of her vision. When ‘looking’ directly at the picture, she can perceive the right half of the screen. By moving her eyes to the left and peering at the screen using her peripheral vision, she is able to see the picture above. Her left eye is totally blind … but covered by a beautifully painted, plastic, cosmetic contact lens!

As you will see from the following web pages, this does not stop her from making the most of life. In fact, if you would like to read an article from the Southern Daily Echo about her, click on the ‘Fame for 5 minutes’ link.

This picture shows the degree of magnification Susan uses most of the time.

Extra notes: She would like to make it clear that she never tints her hair!!! One granddaughter said, ‘Why isn’t your hair grey, Grandma?’ The answer is luck and, presumably, genetics!
